Chronic cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder that lasts for a long time. It is almost always caused by gallstones and a previous episode of acute cholecystitis. Chronic cholecystitis is characterized by recurrent episodes of pain (biliary colic) when gallstones periodically block the cystic duct.
